History of Department
Department of Bacteriology was established in 1st May 1960 as separate department. Dr. Daw Nyun Nyun (Lecturer/Head) named the Department of Microbiology and headed the newly formed department with 2 assistant lecturers and 5 demonstrators firstly. Eight heads have leaded the department. Professor Cho Cho Oo is the present head and conducts the departmental work with 18 teaching staff.
Microbiology is one of the subjects, teaching to third MBBS students. Master degree course was developed in 1976 at Mandalay. After second batch, the course was paused and restarted at 1995 again. Nearly 50 M.Med.Sc graduates were produced successfully and 16 candidates are taking the course in the Second year (1/2017 Batch) and 6 candidates are taking the course in the First year (1/2018 Batch). Ph.D course was expanded in 1999. The 7 Ph.D candidates had graduated and 5 candidates are doing research work. Two teaching staff are attending Ph.D (Medical Microbiology) Course in abroad, one is in Niigata University, Japan and one is in Mahidol University, Thailand. Microbiology is also taught to the master students of Pathology and master students of Preventive and Tropical Medicine.
In addition to teaching activities, scientific talk, symposium, workshop and training are held for staff development. Research work and laboratory service for patients, collaborated with clinical departments are also undertaken.
