Assessment / Evaluation

                        1. Assessment tools:

                                    Theory: Written paper

                        MCQs; 5 responses for each stem; minus system,
carried over,

MSQs / Short Essay type questions & Practical

                        2. Assessment types:

                                    1. Class work:                                     300 marks

                                    2. Summative Assessment:                

                                                Two theory papers                  500 marks

                                                Practical                                  200 marks

                                                            Total                           1000 marks

            3. Class work:

Average percentage of the class test scores (theory papers and practical test) seminar performance, and other academic activities (integrated assessment scores) (to be converted to 300)

4. Summative Assessment (Promotion Examination):

I. Theory Paper :

two theory (written) paper of 3 hours duration each on two separate days (setting of theory examination questions by the Head of Physiology Department of ConvenorMedical University from the questions sent by Heads of Physiology Departments of other Medical University, as has been practiced all along) to be conducted simultaneously in all the Medical Institutes concerned  ......... .

(500 / 1000 marks)

                        For each paper:

                        MCQ                                                                           2.0 hours; 125 marks

                        MSQ / essay types; 6 questions, all compulsory        1.0 hour; 125 marks

                        Paper I (250 / 1000 marks):

                        General Principles, Cell Physiology; Physiology of Blood; Excitable Tissues;

                        Autonomic Nervous System; Cardiovascular, Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal

                        Physiology.

                        Paper II (250 / 1000 marks):

                        Renal Physiology & Regulation of Body Fluids; Skin and thermoregulation;

                        Endocrinology, Reproduction and Neurophysiology (CNS)

II Practical (200 / 1000 marks)

                        to be conducted simultaneously in all the Medical Universities concerned in the

                        mornings (0800 h to 1200 h) and in the afternoons(1300 h onwards).

                        Representatives from each of the other universities will be required.

                        Each student will have to go through a battery of tests made up of 10 components

                        (performance,  identification, and data interpretative skills plus theoretical

background, i.e. underlying principles of the tests) each of 5 min duration

One set: 5x10=50 minutes for each candidate

Four such sets running simultaneously can assess 40 candidates in one session

Four such sessions can assess 160 candidates in one day.

As such, five practical days are required for assessment of candidates

Pass/ fail / Credit/ Distinction Criteria

Pass:

(1) 50% in class work, theory, and practical

                        (2) Overall aggregate: 500 / 1000 (i.e. 50 %)

Moderated Pass

(1) one compartment more than or equal to 46% of allotted marks

(2) Overall aggregate: more than or equal to 460 / 1000

Fail

(1)       46 % in 2 out of 3 compartments (class work, theory, practical) and less than 46% in overall aggregate OR less than a certain percentage agreed upon by the examiners for that particular examination

Passed with Distinction

All the following criteria must be fulfilled:

(1) Class work

                     (a) must have scored at least 75%

                                 (b) must have appeared for all the class tests and scored at least 50 % in any of the tests.

(2) Final theory paper

                     (a) must have scored at least 75%

                                 (b) must have scored at least 50% in each of the four theory compartments

                     (c) no un-attempted questions or zeroes in MSQ / essay compartments

                     (d) must be of sufficient quality to satisfy the examiners

(3) Practical paper

                     (a) must have scored at least 75% of total practical scores

                     (b) no un-attempted questions or zeroes in each of the compartments

(4) Final score: 750 / 1000 and above

(5) In the viva voce, must satisfy the examiners

(6) If one subject is passed with moderation (MP) – not eligible for distinction in

other subjects

(7) Repeaters and supplementary candidates are not eligible for distinction grand viva for that subject.
